PINEAPPLE FLOYD – THE HALL
Pineapple Doughnut/ Floyd proudly present to you…’THE HALL’. A parody of Pink Floyd’s double album ‘THE HALL’ by Trevor Daly and Theo ten Brummelaar.
‘THE HALL’ is a comedy reimagining of the entire double album using the original Pink Floyd music with new lyrics by Trevor Daly and new vocals recorded by Trevor and Theo.
The lyrics feature the adventures of ‘Fools Kingdom’ our first band (ca. 1978-1982) whose members were Theo ten Brummelaar (drums and vocals), Trevor Daly (bass), Les Rankin (guitar and vocals) and Jim Franklin (keyboards). It also references various characters and associates from that time including ex- bass player Rob Baxter, friend and keyboard player the late Ric James, and teachers and kids from Heathcote High school in Sydney, Australia.
The Story  of ‘THE HALL’.
In 1979 Pink Floyd released their epic double album ‘The Wall’. This album was well loved by all members of Fools Kingdom and several songs were included in the bands set list and the source of frequent jamming during band rehearsals.
In 1980 Fools Kingdom agreed to be the house band for a school rock musical play ‘Dracula Spectacular’ performed by students at Heathcote High School (Theo and Les’s former high school). For this ‘gig’ in the Hall they were paid the princely sum of $800. During downtime in rehearsals for the School Play, Trevor started writing joke lyrics for songs on The Wall albums referencing and poking fun at all the band members (including himself) and their history and involvement with the school play, starting with ‘Another Gig in the Hall’. Over several days he re-wrote new lyrics for the entire The Wall double album and shared them with the rest of the band for a laugh. The new words featured numerous in-jokes and some of the various quirks of the band, such as Les having volume control issues (aka playing too loud!), Theo often telling bad puns and jokes, Jim having a somewhat explosive temper at times, and Trevor (having recently replaced Rob as bass player) still being a learner on the bass and not being very good. Around this time Theo’s family also moved from Engadine to Coogee (following renovations to the new house) which included a basement studio where Fools Kingdom rehearsed.
Over the next few decades the lyrics to ‘The Hall’ sat as a Word file on Trevor’s computer. Every now and then he would see them, tinker and refine them for his own amusement, and imagine what it would be like to re-record all the vocals to the entire Floyd albums. But the prospect of having to actually re-record all the Floyd music and vocals was an impossible dream… until…. the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI)!!
In 2020 using an AI website for karaoke singers, Trevor was able to separate and strip out all the lead vocals from the original music of ‘The Wall’ leaving 2 wav files – one with all the original music and no lead vocals, and the other with just the original lead vocals and no music. Using these wav files, in 2024 Trevor and Theo re-recorded all the lead vocals of the double album using the lyrics for ‘The Hall’. With some clever editing and mixing (including inserting bits of the original Floyd tracks where possible) we were able to accurately reproduce the sound of the entire double album. As the new music recording is a mixture of Pineapple Doughnut and Pink Floyd we have called it ‘Pineapple Floyd’.
So here it is…. over 40 years in the making…..we proudly present for your amusement and enjoyment… or not… ‘THE HALL’ by Pineapple Floyd!!
(Now we wait to hear from Floyd’s lawyers….
